Les Bonenfants is a genealogical/historical account of a family line dating back to the 1660s. The ancestral root of this line was Jean-Baptiste Bonenfant, a baker who emigrated from LaRochelle in southern France to Quebec in 1747 in order to advance the well being of his wife and newborn son. Jean-Baptiste not only succeeded in this endeavor but he also became the patriarch of an enduring family line which now extends from French Canada to New England. This account chronicles his predecessors and descendants as well as a number of other families related to the Bonenfants by marriage. However, this is not simply a traditional genealogy consisting of names, dates and genealogical diagrams, Les Bonenfants is a story embedded in its historical context. It explores what is known of the Celtic tribes which inhabited the region of LaRochelle from pre-Roman times to that of Eleanor of Aquitaine. The account then goes on to explain the economic and political events that led to the rise of La Rochelle as an embarkation point for emigration to New France and other regions of North America. It goes on to explain the perils of transatlantic voyages in the mid 1700s and the French and English struggles to maintain their hegemony over North America. As the lineage of the Bonenfant family is outlined, social and economic hardships in French Canada that led to a large exodus of its citizens for New England in the late 1880s are examined. Finally, the author's memoirs of growing up in the bi-lingual and bi-cultural setting of Lewiston, Maine in the 1950s is presented in the context of his French Canadian heritage.
